It is very important for children to keep reading, even during the long, lazy days of summer.

One way to keep your kids reading is to find books on topics about which your children are obsessed.

We all know that children go through phases of obsession – with dinosaurs, race cars, Pokemon, and all kinds of things!

If you will help your child to find books on their ‘topic de jour’, you will have a child much more eager to read.

I know that the teachers feel the difference, in the fall, between the children who continued to nourish their brains and those who didn’t.

I’ve often heard teachers complain that the first month is just getting the children’s brains ‘revved back up’.

If our children can start back to school in the fall ready to jump into the curriculum, it will make for a much more successful year.

For me, though, the most important thing is that children learn how utterly enjoyable reading actually is.

And when we help them find books on their very favorite subjects, even if that is truck engines, or electricity, or makeup techniques, we are much more likely to have a lifelong reader on our hands!

I fully understand that summertime is a time for fun, sun, and play. I am actually against the concept of all-year school – so trust me, I adore the idea of children fully enjoying their summer. And I dearly hope that some of that enjoyment involves reading!

  1. I think the most effective way to get kids to read over summer is get them hooked on a series.

When I was a kid (not too long ago) I remember borrowing a bunch of Hardy Boys books and reading them (about 5) concurrently.

Reading a chapter or two and then changing books kept things interesting for me! It’s the same thing as watching many TV serials each week really.

Yes I know, I was a bit of a nerd!

  2. I think series are a great way to get kids interested in reading – I totally agree! And I was actually excited to hear my daughter’s eagerness to see the new Nancy Drew movie – because, that means I can get her interested in a nice, but old, series of books that might otherwise be deemed, “Oh Mom! That’s so old and dumb!”

    (How’s that for a run-on sentence?)

I think I’d be a little too OCD to read the books concurrently, though! I might rush myself through one to get to another, but, concurrently? Nah…

    Thanks for visiting!!

  3. And hey – nerds rock – and geeks rule the world! We like ‘em nerdy around these parts! LOL!
